I’m a big fan of the 80/20 diet rule: 80% of the time, make good choices about the food you eat; 20% eat whatever you want, whatever you need. Sometimes, I need a burger, some fries, and a beer. That’s when I go to Slater’s 50/50.
Slater’s 50/50 was founded around a passion for gourmet comfort food and craft beer. There are 7 locations in Southern California. Together, Scott Slater and Executive Chef Brad Lyons created their now famous 50/50 Burger – 50% ground bacon and 50% ground beef.
Their popular “Burgers by Design” include 76 different toppings to choose from, including Fritos, cucumber, fried dill pickle chips, pumpkin sauce, kale, and, bacon. They also have pre-designed burgers, such as the Peanut Butter and Jellousy (yes, it has peanut butter, strawberry jelly, and of course, bacon), the B’ B’ B’ Bacon Burger (50/50 patty, thick cut bacon, bacon island dressing on a bacon pretzel bun, and the vegan(!) Eat Your Veggies Burger.
I prefer the original, The 50/50. It’s a 50/50 patty, topped with a sunny side up egg, avocado mash, pepper jack cheese, and chipotle adobo mayo on a white brioche bun. YES. What really makes the burger for me isn’t the 50/50 patty, but the sunny side up egg. It’s a delicious addition.
I’m not a big beer drinker, so I’m not sure if Slater’s has “good beer.” What I do know, is they have about 100 beers on tap and are rotated and updated daily. They also have an excellent happy hour, so I was able to get a pint for $3.50. On my pint glass was Slaters’ new marketing campaign, Excesstasy: The overwhelming excitement felt when indulging in the Slater’s 50/50 experience. I’d say that’s accurate. Slaters is certainly outrageous and over the top.
In addition to my burger, beer and fries (with bacon ketchup, obviously… no, I’m not kidding), I ordered a BACON BROWNIE. It’s a delicious cake-like brownie with bacon bits mixed in the batter and coating the top. It wasn’t overly bacon-y, just a little salty. So the salt mixed with the sweetness of the brownie actually tasted pretty good!
